Heritage Open Days at Central Tramway

Take a unique visit behind the scenes of our historic funicular this September for free as part of Heritage Open Days.

Visitors are offered a unique opportunity to have a guided tour of the Victorian engine room an area usually closed to the public. You will discover the main drive pulley, motor, gear box, disc brake and other vital components that work to carry almost half a million visitors every year.

Originally built in 1881, Central Tramway has worked hard in recent years to restore and renovate much of the equipment to its former glory and has improved the safety of the lift with the addition of new technology and braking systems that can be seen on the tour.

At the end of the tour there will be an opportunity to ask questions and take a free return ride.
