Victorian costume and music will mark the celebrations on the 1st of August at the Tramway with a visit by the Scarborough Town Crier, David Birdsall at midday to mark the historic first journey.

Also enjoy live music with 5 Star Brass between 2 and 4pm (weather permitting)

Visitors who participate in the free children’s workshop or trail will be offered a pass for free travel on the Tramway on the anniversary, children under 18 get free entry into all SMT venues; for activities, children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult who must hold a £3 Annual Pass to gain free entry. (Scarborough Art Gallery has been awarded the VisitEngland ‘We’re Good to Go’ industry standard mark, signifying that it adheres to government and public health guidance with regard to Covid-19).


Event: Anniversary Exhibition

Also marking the occasion will be an exhibition at Scarborough Library. The exhibition will tell the story of Scarborough’s five historic funicular railways, as well as Central Tramway’s unique history and engineering.

There will be a chance to meet members of the team and ask questions and see a model demonstration for children.

Event: Time Travelling Talk on Scarborough’s Funicular Railways
Venue: Seastrand Terrace
Date: 2nd August

Time: 6.30pm-7.30pm
Description: All aboard for a unique journey back in time to discover Scarborough’s five famous funicular railways. Climb atop the former St Nicholas lift bottom station (now the Seastrand Terrace) for a free outdoor experience. Learn about the first cliff railway to be built in the UK, the only steam powered cliff railway in the country, as well as the ill-fated lift and pier on the North Bay, all to mark the 140th anniversary of the Central Tramway Company.
Suitable for all ages.
