MAKE YOUR OWN TRAMWAY MODEL
Create your own model of the tramway with this fun activity from our brand new Fun Fact and Activity Book.
The Central Tramway works on a counter balance system with the help of an electric motor and gravity. Counter balance means that as one tram goes up, the other will come down.
Make your own model of the tramway by attaching a box to each end of a piece of string. Decorate your box with bright colours and make sure you have some passengers on board too.
The Central Tramway has four steel cables that connect the carriages as they move up and down the tracks. If you look closely when you travel you might be able to see them out of the back windows of the carriage. These cables go over a large wheel called a pulley or sheave wheel that is under the top station.
Once you have made your carriages and connected them with a piece of string, put your string over something that is fixed, like a door handle.
Gently pull one of the carriages down and see what happens to the other carriage.
We have a handy template that you can download and print below, you will need to print two, one for each carriage.
And there is a video below to see how it can look.
